Have you ever heard a knock at your door?
Whenever someone knocks on your door it means that they desire to get your attention. More often than not they want to enter for one reason or another. Sometimes we may not want to answer the door and we try to ignore the knocks. That's the way some people do when a bill collector knocks at the front door or rings the doorbell. Some who don't have the money to pay their bill try to pretend that they are not home, but the bill collector continues to knock. That happened to one lady who told her young son to answer the door but say, "She's not here." The little boy tried to follow his mother's instructions to the letter. The boy opened the door boldly and looked the bill collector in the face.
"Is your mother home?" asked the collector.
Then boldly the boy answered, "She say, she not here."
That was the wrong way to answer the door.
Jesus said in, John 10:7-9 "Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture."
Pastors are God's instruments to show sinners and believers the way to paradise. He characterized Himself as the door and each pastor's job is to show those under His care the way to the door.
An old Negro spiritual focused on that door and the knocking with these words, "Somebody's knocking on your door, Oh sinner, why don't you answer, somebody's knocking on your door."
If pastors have one great task it is to help sinners and believers to hear the Holy Spirit knocking at their door. When we are lost the knock is a call to repentance, when we are saved, the knock is a call to action. For this reason pastors are sanctified and set aside to bring each believer to a point in his life experience when he can answer the call of God who is knocking on their door.
As Christians, we know God is knocking on our doors. We must listen to the preached word and prayerfully listen for God to speak in every avenue of life. Through His preacher, written word and revelation we are able to answer and respond to His call.
