Have you ever met anyone who was very smart but always acted very stupid or did very dumb things? If you have, you probably asked, how can anyone who is so smart be so dumb? We have seen people like that all of our lives, and we have continuously asked the same question. When we see educated people committing crimes and being carted off to jail, it pops up again.
When a teacher falls in love with student, we shake our heads and say, How can anyone so smart be so dumb? When the rich old man is courted by the pretty but broke coed, everyone can see the motive except him. They shake their heads and say, How can anyone so smart, be so dumb?
When the accountant, who knows his every action will be reviewed in an audit, decides to embezzle from his employer he acts against what he knows to be right. We see him led off to prison in chains and say, How could anyone so smart, be so dumb?
When the police officer decides to take bribes from the local dealer, he knows that he is breaking the very law he has sworn to uphold. The old lady who watches him out of her window drops her head and says, how can anyone so smart, be so dumb?
When people watch the president of the United States have an affair with a young girl while secret service agents stand outside the white house door, the whole nation asked in bewilderment, How can anyone so smart, be so dumb?
Humans are the smartest of Gods creation. We are able to think, create, imagine and deal with aesthetic issues. Yet, in all of our genius, we still kill, murder steal and rape. In all of our knowledge, we still lack the wisdom necessary to do right. The question could very well be asked of every believer, How could anyone so smart, be so dumb?
As Christian, we dont revel in our personal genius. The more we know, the more we realize that we dont know. There is one thing that we do know, however. We know that God is real and only what you do for him lasts. Those who haven't figured that out yet are too smart for their own good. Today, you will do well, not because you are the smartest, but because you are smart enough to know God for yourself.
