Did your mother ever give you advice that later proved to be true? Do you still hear her words today, although sometimes you ignored them when they were spoken? If so, then you are like millions over the years who have heard their mother’s instructions about life, love, godliness, and happiness but ignored those parts that conflicted with our own ideals. You are also among millions who stumbled upon life’s realities years later and had to say, “Mama told me there would be days like this.”
In the 1960s, the Shirelles were the first women’s group to top the Billboard 100. They sang songs about innocent girls who were tempted to fall in love for the wrong reason. Many remember them for songs such as “Soldier Boy” and “Will you love me tomorrow?” One of their hits was a song about advice that a mother gave a young girl; it was called “Mama Said”—there would be days like this.
The song became an instant hit because nearly everyone can relate to ignoring the words of their mothers, strong advice about life, love, and happiness, until one day what they were told unfolded in front of their eyes and they remember Mama’s words clearly. Then they find themselves saying, ‘Mama said there would be days like this.”
We thank God for giving us godly mothers who tried to guide us and keep us on the path of righteousness. Let us keep their words close to our hearts, because the day will come when we shall realize the truth and power of her words in our lives.
