Have you ever enjoyed something so much that you wanted more? There are some things in life that are so good that we just want more of them. We can't get enough, no matter how we try. These are the good things in life, the pleasant moments, the wonderful experiences and the grand times that seem too short.
If it is an event the time flies quickly. If it is a consumable, it is gone before we even notice it. Vacations seem to end before they begin; honeymoons are too short; and a visit with a good friend flashes by so fast that we lose track of the time.
Our natural tendency is to try to get all we can while we can; to milk the moment for everything we can get from it while the opportunity exists.
Maxwell House Coffee has a slogan that says, Good to the last drop. It says that every drop of their coffee is good, down to the last drop. When we think about life, there are some Maxwell House moments, when things are good to the last drop.
A huge succulent, meaty neckbone is a tasty treat Don't pretend you've never eaten a neckbone. To those who enjoy this treat it can bet so good that you find yourself breaking the bones and sucking them, trying to get to the last drop.
In rural areas of the nation folks once took a large bowl of collard or mustard greens and mashed corn bread in them. Although it was against every rule in the book of etiquette, they took their fingers and ate the greens. It was good! In fact, it was so good that when the greens and corn bread were gone, they licked their fingers! It was good to the last drop! Watermelons grew on the vines in country fields. On occasion folks stumbled upon a juicy red one that seemed to be dripping with sweetness. Sometimes, if we were not careful we could eat all of the red meat then start scrapping the rhein. It was good to the last drop! A good bowl of corn flakes can start a day just right. The cereal floats in milk and the taste is delicious. There are times when we have eaten all the cereal but there is still plenty of milk left. It tastes so good that we break every rule of etiquette as we pick up the bowl and drain it..to get to the last drop! A good movie excites us. We sat on the edges of our seats during the show. But when it was a great show we sit as the names start to scroll across the screen and watch the outtakes and bloopers, listen to the sound track and enjoy it all because it was good to the last drop!
Those who read mystery, romance and science fiction novels have the same story to tell. A great novel is a page turner. You burn the late night oil turning page after page, absorbing the words, scenery, dialogue and drama. A great novel is read down to the last word. It was good to the last drop! The Maxwell House moment is not unique to just coffee, it describes even our spiritual moments. There are times when the spirit is high that we simply want to freeze that moment forever. Peter, James and John were carried to the top of the Mount of Transfiguration and were shown the glories of heaven. They were so excited that they wanted to stay there. They asked to build three tabernacles so they could stay in the presence of the Lord. They delayed their stay as long as they could before returning, because it was good to the last drop.
On one occasion Jesus healed a man who had been a lunatic. After being healed, the man wanted to stay in Jesus' presence but had to be told that he should return home. Being in the presence of the Lord was so intense an experience that man wanted to stay as long as he could. It was good to the last drop.
As believers, we have come to appreciate every day and every situation as one that is blessed by the Lord. It is worthy of rejoicing and praising him and enjoying. It is good to the last drop!
