Disguises
In 1970 Little Milton Campbell released a hit song entitled "If walls could talk." In that song he raised the question of what would happen if the walls of secret meeting places, hotel rooms and other clandestine places could tell what they know. He asked, "What if shoes could tell" all of the secret places that they have gone. The song became a hit because so many people had so many secrets. The playwright, Tyler Perry, even wrote a stage play that focused on the same subject, "What's done in the dark."
Sometimes our wrongs appear to be successfully hidden until God does a close inspection. Those who have ever attended a Six Flags family event know that if you leave and expect to return that your hand is stamped with an invisible florescent stamp. That stamp is not visible to the naked eye. However, when you return your hand is exposed to a black light. Under the black light the stamp is clear. That happens because the black light detects phosphorus in the ink of the stamp and shows it up.
If you walked around all night with a portable black light, you would discover that there are phosphors all over the place. There are lots of natural phosphors, in your teeth and fingernails, among other things. There also a lot of phosphors in manmade material, including television screens and some paints, fabric and plastics. Most fluorescent colored things, such as highlighters, contain phosphors, and you'll find them in all glow-in-the-dark products. Clubs use special black light paint that glows different colors. You can also buy fluorescent black light bubbles, invisible black light ink, fluorescent black light carpet and even fluorescent black light hair gel.
The idea is simple, if it has phosphorus the black light will show it up.
That's the best way to understand how sin appears to be hidden. Much of what we do is hidden from the public eye, but God's eye is light a black light. All of our sins are visible to him. We cannot hide them.
What we do in the dark is always seen by God and will be brought to the light for our neighbors to see as well, in due time.
As Christians, we are constantly aware that God monitors our activities daily. He is aware of everything that we do. We know that he knows all of our secrets so we don't try to hide them from him. There is no place for us to run or hide from his power and oversight. Whatever we do in the dark, will come to the light.
