How far will you go to find what you are looking for?
How hard will you look to find something you really want? How long will you stand in a line to see what you want to see? How much will you endure to acquire that which you consider to be important? If you are like most people there are some things in life you want. There are other things you would like to have. Then there are some things that we simply must have at any cost. When a situation exists for us to experience a must see movie or concert, people will wait in long lines just to get in. When a must have item is on sale, it does not matter how long the lines are; we wait, camp out if necessary, to get what we want. People have been known to travel long distances just to participate in a certain experience. There are some who have no limits to how far they will go or what they will do to get what they are looking for; but they should.
Today, put a limit on the amount of wrong you with endure but no limit on the amount of good you can do. In the movie Star Trek space travelers spanned great distances going where no one had gone before looking for stars and planets. While the movie Star Trek shows imaginary characters chasing the stars for generations, the bible tells us about the original Star Trekkers. These were men who followed a star in hopes of finally being able to defeat evil, triumph over injustice and to bring peace to the universe. They did not have a space ship or electronic gadgets. In fact, electricity hadn't been invented and the most reliable travel over long sandy distances was on a camel; yet the bible tells us about their quest to follow a star that would point to a child that would boldly go where no man had gone before.
The men were called Magi, or wise men. Their goal was to follow a strange star that appeared in the heavens and see where it led them. The ancient scrolls had predicted the birth of a child that would change the world and they wanted to see this child. They followed the star path over a journey that took months and extended into nearly two years until they found the Lord. They found him, worshipped him, showered him with gifts and returned home. Today there are millions of people who are still looking for the spirit of the Christ child. They desperately yearn to find him for themselves and to boldly go where no man has gone before. They are not riding camels or flying through galaxies in space ships, but they are looking in churches, reading bibles, attending Christian fellowships, bible classes and prayer services around the world, looking for a savior. They are the next generation of Star Trekkers, who are looking for the king.
As Christians, we understand the mystery of the star that shone brightly in the heavens. We know what it meant. Yet there is another generation of star trekkers before us who go forward with one change. Whereas those who went before them followed the star and went boldly where no man had gone before; this generation has the advantage of going where many have gone before. Like the wise men of old; every generation that seeks him will find him, worship him and leave rejoicing. Today, you should find him all over again; then leave rejoicing.
