Have you ever been in a distant place, only
to bump in to someone from home?
Those who have traveled know this
experience. These were the times when you were hundreds of miles away from
home, but stumbled into a familiar face in a supermarket, in a shopping mall or
while attending a public activity. Some learn that our neighbor saw us much
earlier, from across a room or from a distance in the crowd, and had been
watching us before speaking. It lets you know what a small world in which we
live. There are very few places we can go in this world and not be seen.
The little children play hide and go
seek in the house. Where can anyone hide in your house that they cannot be
found? There are just so many places you
can hide. They are usually always found even those who hide themselves in
closets, cupboards, under beds and even in the dirty clothes hamper.
We all have our hiding places. Corrie
Ten Boom wrote of her secret sanctuary from the Nazis in her book the "The
Hiding Place.” Ali Baba and the 40
thieves of the Arabian Nights hid themselves inside of a mountain whose door
only opened with the words "Open Sesame.” The prophet Elijah tried to hide from
King Ahab under a Juniper Tree.
We go to our hiding places because we
don’t want to be seen.
It’s an eerie feeling to be watched
in secret. In 2002 a Monroe woman, Susan Wilson, was the victim of a neighbor
who installed video cameras all over her house, including her bedroom, and
recorded everything. When discovered, prosecutors were frustrated because while
there were laws about unlawful entry, and peeping toms, there were no laws
about installing cameras in a neighbor’s house. Wilson went on a campaign to
get laws changed; nine states now have video voyeurism laws.
Very few people relish being watched
in secret. So we install curtains, and blinds in homes, darkly tint the windows
in our cars, protect our email passwords, and register in hotels under assumed
names when we don’t want to be discovered. But, suppose I told you that despite
our best efforts at remaining anonymous, that God knows who we are, where we
are, how we got where we are and why?
It might be a surprise to some, but God
knows all of our identities and hiding places and even our thoughts. He has written it in his word. Psalms 139:2-3 says,
"Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my
thoughts afar off. Thou compasseth my path and my lying down, and art
acquainted with all my ways." It means God knows and sees everything we
do. He sees us, even though we can’t see Him.
As Christians, we are aware that God
knows all about us. He keeps his eye on us, not to spy on us, but to protect
us, provide for us and direction. It should give us a sense of security to know
that He sees us, even though we can’t see Him.
