Have you ever seen people in their comfort zones? Our comfort zone is that area of our lives in which we feel safe, secure and comfortable. It may involve our daily routines at home or work or our expectations in our leisure or even in the church. Once we settle into our comfort zone it is difficult to get us to make changes, especially if the changes threaten our present circumstance.
We have become comfortable with many things. We rarely change our hairstyles because we are comfortable with our present style. The decor of our houses change when wear and tear demands it but rarely before then. Our diet is relatively the same, our friends are the same, and most everything else about us usually remains the same. When we get things the way we like them, we resist any effort to change them.
For many that also applies to their relationship with God. Many are comfortable in their present state even if they are far away from what God expects of them. Some have reached a point where they are happy that they have improved their situation but have no desire to uproot themselves or make any major changes. They have settled into their comfort Zone and have decided to let the status quo stand.
If we have settled on a level beneath that which God desires for us, then there is only one course of action available that will position us to improve our relationship with him; he has to shake us up, turn us around then replant our feet on solid ground.
We rarely embrace change, so in order to help us God has to shake up our whole situation so that we can be used by him.
As Christians, we know God has great things in store for us. We know that at times we get too comfortable in our zones and become slack in our faith and service. Every now and then God has to shake us before he can use us, then and only then are we fit for service in the kingdom.
