Have you ever picked up your favorite CD Jacket only to discover that the wrong recording was inside? Back when 33 13 rpm albums were popular, the album covers were beautifully decorated and contained photographs of recording artists and other information. For many of the popular recording, the album covers became collector's items. Even as Compact Discs permeate the scene today, there are still millions of homes that have the old albums in music bins or decorating walls. On occasion, we may pull out an old album to stroll down memory lane, only to learn that what's on the inside does not match what's on the outside. Many frantically go through every album they have and find that somewhere in the stack there is another one with the wrong record inside. It happens with compact discs, video recordings and other articles in which it is possible for what's inside to get separated from what's outside. It's frustrating to some; in fact, it's so frustrating that they won't stop until they can straighten it out.
A generation ago there was a song that said, Let me live the life I sing about in my song. To a large extent, the songs we like are extensions of ourselves. They reflect our emotional state at the moment and generally our temperament. Recording artists who sing love songs, have a general reputation of being lovable if they are having trouble achieving the idea. Even rappers have to represent. Will Smith, the Fresh Prince, raps with rhyme and intelligence. His life-style also reflects his rap. Gangsta Rappers like Mystikal and Snoop Dog, talk mean, tough and ugly. Their fans wouldn't follow them if they always appeared wearing three piece suits and weren't really what they rapped about. Whether its good or bad, we expect singers to live the life of their song.
Every believer is part of God's choir. We sing his praises on a daily basis. Our album jacket is full of beautiful pictures of the goodness of God. Our title attracts those who see the cover. They are interested. They are curious. They watch and they listen to the melody that is played for them to hear.
What if the melody of holiness and godliness that we sing about in our song is out of tune with our lives?
The goal of every believer is to keep it real. To make the songs of praise, thanksgiving and faith that they sing about on a daily basis, a reflection of what they really believe and apply in their lives on a daily basis.
As Christians we strive to sing praises to God. We want the praises we sing however to reflect the melody of life and love that is in our heart.
