Bread
There is a favorite type of bread for many in the South, it's a bread that many simply call "Sweet Bread."
What is sweet bread? It depends on the side of the track you favor! On one side of the track Sweet Bread refers to a delicacy made from the heart, stomach, pancreas, throat or the neck of a cow, lamb or and pig. They strip the membranes away, soak it salt water, poach it in milk, dry it, chill it, bread it and then fry it. When eaten it looks and tastes like a large hunk of bread that that has a sweet taste. On that side of the track they call that concoction sweet bread.
On the other side of the track sweet bread has a different meaning. It has a little flour, a pinch of salt, eggs, a little cooking oil, a little baking soda, sugar and a little milk.
Nobody knows why they call either version sweet bread. One is not bread at all and only imitates being sweet but is not really sweet. The other is not bread at all, but is really a cake that does the same thing as bread, but makes it so much easier to eat and leaves a great taste in your mouth.
When Southern folks talk about sweetbread they usually mean a little small cake, sometimes cut in squares, presented on a sheet or in little paper container, they call it a cup cake instead of sweet bread with an icing.
Bread and cake have about the same nutritional value. The difference is that one is good for you and tastes great while the other is good for you, tastes great and is sweet, too!
Must of enjoy a good slice of bread, but for many, sweet bread is better!
But there was another kind of bread. It's not corn bread, light bread, sourdough bread or sweet bread, it is from heaven. It's doesn't have an adjective to describe it like "Wonder" bread, although it is a wonder. We just refer to it as the bread from heaven.
It's the blessing of Christ in our lives every day helping us to grow stronger as it means our daily needs. It's the daily bread we pray for in our prayers. It's the bread that helps us deal with sour dough situations with the sweetness of God's word.
As Christians, we thank God for sending us bread from heaven. This bread is His son Jesus who feeds us daily. The song writer wrote, "Bread of Heaven, Bread of Heaven, feed me till I want no more." -Fill me with, Sweet bread!
